Rebecca Sehn | Children's Portrait Photographer in White Rock, BC bio picture

a little bit about yours truly on her 24th birthday.

Today is my 24th birthday.

I grew up on Lucy Maude Montgomery, Laura Ingalls Wilder, and later, J. K. Rowling. (If you don’t know who any of those people are, you may never completely understand me.)

During my biggest Harry Potter phase, I was depressed for days when I came to the conclusion that I would never be a wizard.

I used to copy everything my big sister (Katie) did.  When I discovered that it was too difficult to be that good, I revolted and soon became known as “Becker the House Wrecker” at the age of 4.

My grandpa owns a dairy farm, and I used to be in 4-H.  I trained cows for the fairs every summer for about 7 years.  I am not an animal person.  Although I can appreciate how people think some dogs are really cute.

I always did really well in school, but always had great friends and was never teased for it.  (Even though I used to have boy-hair and really ugly glasses.)

I have terrible coordination, and therefore have never been any good at sports. I only made the high school volleyball team because of my height (5′ 9.5″).  My eight year old nephew beats me at almost everything.

I love to eat.  Dark chocolate, mashed potatoes, beef bourguignon, and coconut curry chicken to name a few.

I am well traveled for my age ( I think.)  I have traveled to at least 16 countries in the last 6 years, mostly by backpacking.

Even though running my own business is extremely time consuming and sometimes stressful, I feel really lucky to be able to do what I love.

I have seen the world, have amazing friends and family, am a working photographer, and am going on a picnic tonight with the best husband I could ever ask for.

Today I’m 24, and I feel very lucky.  :)

Happy birthday and enjoy your picnic!

jolene & russ are engaged

I like these two a lot.  When I first met with them, they fed me Christmas baking.  When we met for their engagement session on Friday, they brought me 100 mile cookies.  While eating those cookies for breakfast every day since then, I have been contemplating offering them free sessions in exchange for baking for the rest of their lives.  :D

Also, they weren’t afraid to laugh while we were taking photos; which I love.  (I think it really comes through in your images when you’re actually having a good time!)  Plus they picked an awesome location; Lighthouse Park.  It was my first time shooting there, and the scenery was very similar to Whytecliff Park, which I also love.  The views in West Vancouver are breathtaking.  Check them out:

I hope you enjoy these!  You can click here to check out their image slideshow.

I seriously recommend heading up to this park with a picnic; it is so beautiful.  I’m definitely going back with Adam sometime soon.  Hope you’re all having a good Wednesday!

Rebecca – I stumbled on your site a few months back from another site I follow. I am a HUGE fan of your work! I have absolutely no artistic ability of my own, but I love photography and you are such an amazing talent. I always feel a little odd commenting on strangers’ blogs, but after I saw this post I just had to say something. These photos are breathtaking! You have such a gift. Thank you for sharing your work.

PS. Happy birthday and congrats on your marriage!

mother of the bride says these pictures are stunning, not only of the subjects, but the location (could it be better?)

LOVE these shots! Especially the second one where he is twirling her around.

jen & rob got married, and a little note about rain.

Today it is raining.  Now, I love rain a lot – I love the sound it makes on the roof when I wake up.  I love the smell of it on the pavement when it hasn’t rained for a while. I love how the rain reminds me that I haven’t watered my little garden for a week and now that I’ve remembered I still don’t have to… because it’s raining. And I also love how it makes my car look clean. (Keyword: look.)  I love rain, I really do!   But it makes things a little tricky when I’m shooting a wedding….. although if you have a super awesome couple like Jen & Rob , it makes it much easier.  :)

I’ve had about 2.5 rainy day weddings this summer, and I’m extremely happy with how they went.  This is how I prepare if it looks like rain:

1) I keep a bunch of matching umbrellas in my trunk at all times – I think I have about 10 of them.

2) Pre-planning.  I will almost always scout the location we are to be shooting portraits at before the wedding day.  When I do this, I look for spots I would like to shoot in if it’s cloudy, if it’s sunny, or if it’s raining.  If there aren’t many good undercover spots in case of rain, I will wait until the week of the wedding.  If at that time it looks like there’s a good chance of rain, I will find a covered ‘back-up’ location.  It’s all about preparation.

3) Learn to work with very small spaces.  Sometimes there just isn’t a lot of undercover space, and I need to work under the overhang of a building, or in a doorway.  Sometimes by just cropping in tight to the couple and changing my angle, the background will change and it can look like an entirely different photo.  Learning to do a variety of images in a small space can be crucial on a rainy day wedding.  The other thing I should mention is shooting wide open.  Chances are if I am limited for space, the background of my photo might not be too pretty.  If I shoot wide, that dumpster in the background can turn into a pretty blur behind my bride and groom.

4) I don’t freak out.  My bride is probably a little stressed about photos because it is raining, and I need to stay calm and in control to let her know that her photos are still going to be beautiful:  because they will be!

5) I wear my waterproof jacket and I put my hair up.  Just because I’m trying to keep the bride and groom dry doesn’t mean I’m not going to get soaked, and this helps to prevent my showing up at the reception looking like a drowned rat.  :)

And that’s it!

On to Jen & Rob.  I used to work with Jen, and have known her for more than five years now.  She knew me before I was even dating Adam, and before I decided to become a photographer, and I’ve known her before she was dating Rob.  Time flies!  I am so happy to see her so happy, and so happy that she asked me to capture her wedding day for her.  They were married at the cutest little church in Fort Langley (St Andrew’s), and their reception was at the Fort Langley Golf Course.

I arrived in the morning to meet the girls:
Jen’s veil, if I remember correctly, was made of a part of her mother’s veil and a piece of her grandmother’s veil.  It was stunning.  The handkerchief on the right was her grandmothers, which she kept in her purse.Putting on the dress:Photographing in the church was a little tricky.  It was quite dark, there was no flash allowed, and I was required to stay at the very back of the church except during the very beginning and the signing.  Thank goodness for my 70-200 2.8!
I love this shot of Jen:And I needed to post one of her famous smile.  I love how her eyes light up – you can’t help but grin back. This was one of my ‘rain’ locations – the above photo was taken here as well.  You can see how wet the ground is right in front of the girls – I had them stay right under the overhang of the parking garage to stay dry.The boys, in the same parking garage:The rain died down a little when we were shooting on the bridge in Fort Langley:
And stayed pretty light when we headed over to Sendall Gardens in Langley:First dance:

Alrighty, back to work!  Jen & Rob’s wedding was #1 of my double header weekend, so Lindsay & Nathan’s wedding will be coming up next.  :D  Until then, I hope you’re all enjoying this rainy Tuesday!
