Today it is raining. Now, I love rain a lot – I love the sound it makes on the roof when I wake up. I love the smell of it on the pavement when it hasn’t rained for a while. I love how the rain reminds me that I haven’t watered my little garden for a week and now that I’ve remembered I still don’t have to… because it’s raining. And I also love how it makes my car look clean. (Keyword: look.) I love rain, I really do! But it makes things a little tricky when I’m shooting a wedding….. although if you have a super awesome couple like Jen & Rob , it makes it much easier. :)
I’ve had about 2.5 rainy day weddings this summer, and I’m extremely happy with how they went. This is how I prepare if it looks like rain:
1) I keep a bunch of matching umbrellas in my trunk at all times – I think I have about 10 of them.
2) Pre-planning. I will almost always scout the location we are to be shooting portraits at before the wedding day. When I do this, I look for spots I would like to shoot in if it’s cloudy, if it’s sunny, or if it’s raining. If there aren’t many good undercover spots in case of rain, I will wait until the week of the wedding. If at that time it looks like there’s a good chance of rain, I will find a covered ‘back-up’ location. It’s all about preparation.
3) Learn to work with very small spaces. Sometimes there just isn’t a lot of undercover space, and I need to work under the overhang of a building, or in a doorway. Sometimes by just cropping in tight to the couple and changing my angle, the background will change and it can look like an entirely different photo. Learning to do a variety of images in a small space can be crucial on a rainy day wedding. The other thing I should mention is shooting wide open. Chances are if I am limited for space, the background of my photo might not be too pretty. If I shoot wide, that dumpster in the background can turn into a pretty blur behind my bride and groom.
4) I don’t freak out. My bride is probably a little stressed about photos because it is raining, and I need to stay calm and in control to let her know that her photos are still going to be beautiful: because they will be!
5) I wear my waterproof jacket and I put my hair up. Just because I’m trying to keep the bride and groom dry doesn’t mean I’m not going to get soaked, and this helps to prevent my showing up at the reception looking like a drowned rat.
And that’s it!
On to Jen & Rob. I used to work with Jen, and have known her for more than five years now. She knew me before I was even dating Adam, and before I decided to become a photographer, and I’ve known her before she was dating Rob. Time flies! I am so happy to see her so happy, and so happy that she asked me to capture her wedding day for her. They were married at the cutest little church in Fort Langley (St Andrew’s), and their reception was at the Fort Langley Golf Course.
I arrived in the morning to meet the girls:

Jen’s veil, if I remember correctly, was made of a part of her mother’s veil and a piece of her grandmother’s veil. It was stunning. The handkerchief on the right was her grandmothers, which she kept in her purse.
Putting on the dress:
Photographing in the church was a little tricky. It was quite dark, there was no flash allowed, and I was required to stay at the very back of the church except during the very beginning and the signing. Thank goodness for my 70-200 2.8!

I love this shot of Jen:
And I needed to post one of her famous smile. I love how her eyes light up – you can’t help but grin back.
This was one of my ‘rain’ locations – the above photo was taken here as well. You can see how wet the ground is right in front of the girls – I had them stay right under the overhang of the parking garage to stay dry.
The boys, in the same parking garage:
The rain died down a little when we were shooting on the bridge in Fort Langley:
And stayed pretty light when we headed over to Sendall Gardens in Langley:
First dance:

Alrighty, back to work! Jen & Rob’s wedding was #1 of my double header weekend, so Lindsay & Nathan’s wedding will be coming up next. :D Until then, I hope you’re all enjoying this rainy Tuesday!
